AI Tools for Public Diplomacy Practitioners

In the realm of multilateral relations, AI is fostering a new era of collaboration.
The Institute for public diplomacy is especially excited about the new possibilities AI brings and has specifically prioritized bringing AI into public diplomacy to advance  interests of civil society actors at the United Nations and other multilateral organizations because IOs operate as the public messaging forums for global cooperation.
Generative language tools, such as ChatGPT, use AI to generate  text in response to input.
These tools are currently available for public diplomacy practitioners.

AI translation and language tools

The current official and working languages of the United Nations are Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian, and Spanish. However, in practice, most events and documents are available primarily in English, creating barriers for civil society actors who are not fluent in the language.

Striking a balance between the practical dominance of English and the imperative of linguistic inclusion remains a critical challenge for the international community. Ensuring equitable multilingual access is essential for meaningful civil society participation at the global level and for fostering more effective and inclusive multilateral cooperation.

The Institute recommends using the European Commission’s free and secure AI language tools to translate, generate, and improve content in multiple languages. These services are made available in the EU under the Digital Europe Programme for use by EU institutions, public administrations, academia, SMEs, NGOs, Digital Europe Programme projects and EPSO candidates.

We welcome expressions of interest
from civil society representatives, academic institutions, and subject-matter experts engaged in public diplomacy’s priority areas.
Kindly share information on your ongoing initiatives or planned events for consideration of collaboration or broader promotion within our network.

We're co-designers, co-producers and co-consumers of public diplomacy.
